“The baton for the TMCO performance was wielded by guest conductor Dima Slobodeniouk, who had led the Boston Symphony the day before in a program of Liszt and Sibelius. His Tchaikovsky was the kind of brilliant performance that throws a whole new light on a familiar work, balancing beauty of sound and specificity of emotional expression with structural rigor and visceral excitement. His poised, beautifully controlled technique offered a masterclass in conducting. He communicated his detailed wishes to the orchestra with heightened clarity, dramatically shaping both the performance and enhancing the audience’s experience as well. He was rewarded with a great performance of this brilliant score by all sections of the orchestra, most notably the strings, who dug in deep and produced the kind of tonal richness you would expect from the best world-class ensembles, along with the energy and enthusiasm of youthful discovery.”
